The Fickle Lives Of Football Fans
Wednesday, 28 November 2007
So was anybody else counting the number of times that they heard the words "English players" or "England players" during the Premier League games last weekend? I think I gave up counting on Match of The Day when it got to around 70 mentions. Do people honestly believe that the problem of not enough English players getting the chance to play at the top domestic level is a new one, something that has sprung out of thin air? I'm not that old and even I can remember the days when you had a quota of foreign, and even british players for each team in the old first division. It was there for a reason, to protect the English game. Take it away and within 2 generations the national team is a disgrace, what a surprise!

I suppose the other stand out thing was the amount of stick the England team players were getting. Steven Gerrard, Fat Frank, Shaun Wright-Phillips were all singled out for stick, no real wonder when you compare their domestic form to that of playing for their country. Are English footballers these days a bunch of overpaid fairies, yes! It seems to me that we British have adapted our game completely to fit in with the rest of Europe, diving, crying, wage demands, throwing hissy fits, fussy refs, no tackling! Who invented the game of football? Who won 2 world wars so that we could maintain our way of life (including the bloody way we play football)? We're just like Spain, Italy, Germany now but without the skill.

I would wish Liverpool good luck tonight, but then Liverpool as a team and a club are now about as English as I am a tea towel.

This Weekends Premier League Fixtures
Friday, 23 November 2007
Here are the Premier League fixtures for this weekend (24th and 25th of November)

24.11 12:45 Newcastle - Liverpool
24.11 15:00 Arsenal - Wigan
24.11 15:00 Birmingham - Portsmouth
24.11 15:00 Bolton - Manchester Utd
24.11 15:00 Everton - Sunderland
24.11 15:00 Man City - Reading
24.11 15:00 Mid'h - Aston Villa
24.11 17:15 Derby - Chelsea
25.11 13:30 West Ham - Tottenham
25.11 16:00 Fulham - Blackburn

It will be nice to get back to normal after the disapointment of the international break (who'd have thought 2 premier league players would be responsible for England not qualifying for the Euro Championships?) The Newcastle-Liverpool, West Ham-Tottenham and Fulham-Blackburn games will all be featured on Sky Sports whilst Setanta are covering the Derby Chelsea game live. I think of all the games I'm most looking forward to the West Ham, Tottenham London derby, that one normally gets a bit spicy!

Second City My Ass
Tuesday, 20 November 2007
So Steve Bruce has decided to up sticks and move away from Birmingham City to that footballing giant.......Wigan. How embarassing must that be for Birmingham? Steve Bruce did very little wrong at Birmingham and they seemed determined on doing a Jol on him I guess anywhere would do, even perhaps the only town in England where football is not the most popular sport. Good luck to him and I wish Wigan well, for being a bunch of money centric 2 faced shite bags I wish nothing but relegation for Birmingham.

Anyway on to brighter news, England can still qualify for next years European Championships. This is quite an achievement for a footballing nation that has less players playing in the Champions League than Scotland. Seriously if something isn't done now to rescue the English game in 5 or 6 years we're going to be screwed. Forget all this politically correct nonsense, we need more English players playing at the top level of the game, preferably in England. How many of the foriegners are really world class, very few is the answer and yet they keep on pouring into our game because they are relatively cheap labour. We need to look after our own first, come on England, for once I'd be happy with a bore draw against Croatia.

Is Owen Hargreaves The New Louis Saha?
Friday, 16 November 2007
Not a lot to talk about this week what with yet another international break. Is it only me or do others find the international game disappointing 90% of the time? You have to watch so many games just to find one that is even mildly entertaining. Hopefully with Scotland due to play Italy in a vital European Championships qualifying game there should be some entertainment (if nothing else the Scottish supports are always bloody excellent).

Anyway, so is Owen Hargreaves the nest Louis Saha? Not in terms of playing style obviously (that would just be mental) but in the way he can get injured at the slightest look. All it takes is for somebody to fart within 50 yards of him and he seems to be out injured again. What's strange is that he seems to really throw himself into games when he does play, I can't decide whether he's a bit of a girls blouse (aka Louis Saha) or Fergie just doesn't want him playing for England.

The Weekend That Was
Monday, 12 November 2007
Here's the full set of results from this weekends Premier League Games. Personally speaking it was one of those weekends where life gets in the way and I didn't get to catch a huge amount of the action. I did manage to see the 2 big derby games where I thought that Sunderland were very unlucky against Newcastle (talk about a team underperforming) and Villa where jammy as hell to get a win over Birmingham especially after the first half penalty that never was. The only other game I saw (eventually after a lot of looking for a channel) was the Man Utd, Blackburn game was all a bit of a non event. With that 2-0 victory United currently top the table but probably not for long with Arsenal playing Reading tonight.

Portsmouth 0 - 0 Manchester City (0 - 0)
Bolton 0 - 0 Middlesbrough (0 - 0)
Manchester Utd 2 - 0 Blackburn (2 - 0)
Tottenham 4 - 0 Wigan (3 - 0)
Chelsea 1 - 1 Everton (0 - 0)
Birmingham 1 - 2 Aston Villa (0 - 1)
Liverpool 2 - 0 Fulham (0 - 0)
Derby 0 - 5 West Ham (0 - 1)
Sunderland 1 - 1 Newcastle (0 - 0)

Notice that Chelsea only managed a draw at home, wonder how long until they replace the manager?

Liverpool stuff Besiktas 8-0
Wednesday, 7 November 2007
Congratulations go out to Premier League strugglers (well they can't manage a win) Liverpool who set a new Champions League record yesterday by stuffing Besiktas eight nil . A hat-trick by Yossi Benayoun was added to by 2 a piece for Crouch and Babel with of course the obligatory goal by Steven Gerrard. It's a record Champions League victory but it will mean nothing if Liverpool can't win their next 2 games! The other Premier League team playing, Chelsea only managed a draw ending their new managers golden run of form.

Both Arsenal and Man Utd play tonight with the chance of securing early qualification to the knockout stages. Manchester United are at home to Dynamo Kiev whilst Arsenal are away to Slavia Prague.

Weekends Premier League Results, Fergie Lets Rip
Monday, 5 November 2007
Arsenal 2 - 2 Manchester Utd
Aston Villa 2 - 0 Derby
Everton 3 - 1 Birmingham
Fulham 3 - 1 Reading
Middlesbrough 1 - 1 Tottenham
Newcastle 1 - 4 Portsmouth
Wigan 0 - 2 Chelsea
Blackburn 0 - 0 Liverpool
West Ham 1 - 1 Bolton

So they reckon a billion people tuned in to watch the Arsenal, Manchester United game on Saturday lunchtime, I wonder how many were still awake after the first half? Was a shocker wasn't it? Luckily it really got going in the second half though, suppose most people would see the draw as being a fair result (unless your name is Alex Ferguson). Even if Arsenal were impotent up front they just about had enough of the ball to justify a point. Looks like Fergie will be in hot water again for his comments about ref Howard Webb. If anything I'd say Webb was guilty of killing the beautiful game, I can't remember a game with soo many petty stopages, I don't think I can remember a serious tackle in the whole game. Never mind the free kick he didn't give, any panel should be looking at the countless free kicks he did give for sweet FA.

Other highlights of the weekend included the Blackburn, Liverpool game, what a stormer that was! (OK only joking). Seriously though there were some great goals scored, Goal Of The Month on Match of The Day will be a cracker in November, Young's goal for Middlesborough will probably even make it as a goal of the season contender.

A final thought goes with Chelsea, all of a sudden they are closing in on the top spotsagain. I give it 2 weeks until somebody else spits their dummy and trashes the spirit at the club (Obviously not John Terry as he's far too well paid to say anything controversial).

Biggest Premer League Game So Far This Season
Friday, 2 November 2007
Tomorrow lunch time will see the biggest Premier League game of the season so far as Arsenal take on Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium. table but Man Arsenal currently head up the leagueUtd are not far behind, not bad for a team that had a "terrible" start to the season.

Neutrals will be in for a treat as the 2 teams that play the best football in the league, Arsenal's typical slow passing game has been added to this year with the option of quicker balls forward. Man Utd still prefer to play through their wide men and with Ronaldo, Nani and Giggs all available it's sure to be a cracker. Lets just hope for an early goal to really kick things off!

The star man for for Arsenal at the moment is Cesc Fabregas and he'll be wanting to upset United again (just like he did when he threw food at Alex Ferguson a few years back!), this time by scoring against the title rivals. Manchester United will be looking to Wayne Rooney and Carlos Teves to carry on their great partnership and hopefully bag a couple.

The game will be shown live on Sky Sports, I'll probably be heading to the pub to watch it, it's also a definite to be shown through the many streaming programs that cover the Premier League like TVAnts and SOPCast. I'll give details of what channels are showing it tomorrow.
